Reading does not come naturally. Our brain must be taught to hear the individual sounds in words, identify letters, and connect the sounds of language to those letters. Only after this has happened, can we glean meeting from a written text. This illustration of the reading brain by Dr. Carolyn Strom shows how multiple areas of the brain work together to make reading possible.
